Miroslav Filipović

Miroslav Filipović (5 June 1915 – 1946), also known as Tomislav Filipović and Tomislav Filipović-Majstorović, was a Croatian Nazi collaborator, Franciscan friar and military chaplain, and convicted war criminal. During World War II in Yugoslavia, he participated in mass murder of Serbs and other non-Croats by the Croatian Ustaše regime, particularly in the Jasenovac concentration camp. His actions in the camp earned him the nickname ''The Devil of Jasenovac'' and ''Friar Satan'' . During the war, Filipović was convicted of war crimes by a German military court, and after the defeat of the Ustaše, a Yugoslav civil court had him hanged.
==Early life==
Filipović's date of birth was 5 June 1915, but little else about his early years has been recorded.〔(''Jasenovac - Donja Gradina: Industry of Death, 1941-45'' )〕 In 1938 he joined the Franciscan Order at Petrićevac monastery, Banja Luka, and took “Tomislav” as his religious name.〔''Tko je tko u NDH: Hrvatska 1941-1945'' by Darko Stuparić, Minerva, Zagreb: 1997, pg. 114
''Zahtjev je usvojen te je Filipović isključen iz franjevačkog reda 10. VII. 1942, kada gubi i pravo na ime fra Tomislav.''〕
In 1941, following establishment of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), a puppet state installed by the Axis Powers embracing Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as most of Croatia by the Ustaše, an organisation of extremist Croatian nationalists, Filipović was assigned to a chaplaincy in the Rama region in northern Herzegovina.〔(Jasenovac: Diverse Interpretations )〕 He did not take up the assignment. In January 1942, after completing his theological exams in Sarajevo,〔''Sukob simbola: politika, vjere i ideologije u Nezavisnoj Državi Hrvatskoj'' by Jure G. Kristo, Nakladni zavod Globus, 2001, ISBN 953-167-133-8; pg. 105〕 he became a military chaplain with the Ustaša. A report by the State Commission of Croatia for the Investigation of the Crimes of the Occupation Forces and their Collaborators (SCC), Section D-XXVI: "Crimes in the Jasenovac Camp" (Zagreb 1946), as of August 2008 is available in English〔http://www.jasenovac-info.com/cd/biblioteka/jasenovac1946/jasenovac1946.pdf〕 and in Serbian.〔http://www.jasenovac-info.com/cd/biblioteka/jasenovac1946/jasenovac-1946.html〕
